Hull Life: How Long a Wooden Phinisi Actually Lasts

A well-built hardwood hull, properly maintained, works for decades. A hull of the same construction, neglected between haul-outs, can need major plank replacement within a handful of seasons.   2. Water gets behind the planking rather than merely against it. The inside face of the plank and the frame behind it stay damp.
  3. Fresh water is the real enemy, not salt. Rain and condensation collecting in bilges and behind ceiling boards create the conditions for fungal decay that salt water largely prevents.
  4. A frame softens. Fastenings lose their grip in decayed timber.
  5. The plank now moves against a frame that cannot hold it, which opens the seam further.

By the time the symptom is visible — persistent weeping, a soft spot underfoot, a plank that has gone slightly proud — the underlying problem is typically several years old and several times more expensive than it was at stage one. Why fresh water matters more than salt
